FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

The Willard Carnival was certainly a huge success! Although the weather chose not to cooperate for an outdoor event, the Carnival Committee planned for a wonderful indoor alternative. Although I have not received hard data about the event, it seemed to me to be very well attended. Many families made several trips to the ticket table and everyone, adults and children, appeared quite happy and relaxed. The Carnival offered something for everyone. The children enjoyed the games and entertainment (including the dunk tank), while the adults enjoyed the delicious food and the silent auction. An event of this magnitude does not happen without a tremendous amount of planning. Kudos to the Carnival Co-Chairs: Tina Labadini, Becky Lopresti, and Connie Benn and to the many members of the Carnival Committee and the scores of parent and teacher volunteers who assisted. The Carnival is a major source of revenue for the PTG and the children of Willard certainly benefit from the additional opportunities that the PTG is able to provide.

Every elementary school child loves Field Day! Field Days were held on Tuesday (K & 1) and Wednesday (Gr. 4 & 5) of this week. Field Day for grade 2 & 3 is planned for Thursday, weather permitting. Many parent volunteers assisted with the various events. Field Day included a wide range of games and activities. Some, like Marble Toes, were quite unique. Ask your child to tell you about his/her favorites.

The 5th Grade Arts Night, held on Wednesday, was wonderful evening. The evening began with the Art Retrospective. In preparation for this special event, students have been preparing their work over several weeks. In addition to the art work that they chose to display, each student wrote a reflective essay about his/her work. Many chose to write about their favorite piece, explaining why it was their favorite piece and explaining the technique that they used. This process provided students with a unique opportunity to reflect on their growth in the visual arts and to share their insights with the school community through their essay. As a school community, we have had a chance to take an early peek at this work since Mrs. Saunders has been been busy hanging student work all week. Following the Art Retrospective, students showcased their musical talents with a performance by the 5th Grade Chorus, Band, and Orchestra. The students performed beautifully and it was wonderful to experience the concert in our new auditorium! I am grateful to Ms. Bethell, Mr. Hendricks, Mr. Seeley, Mrs. Anderson, and Mrs. Saunders for all that they do to nurture the artistic and musical talents of our students. Our students have so many talents, the 5th Grade Arts Night offers a wonderful opportunity for parents to enjoy and celebrate their child's accomplishments in the arts.

The 5th Grade Celebration is scheduled for June 18th at 10:30 AM. All 5th grade parents are invited to attend. The last day of school is a half day on June 21st. At dismissal, 5th graders will be recognized with rousing applause by all students and staff, as the 5th graders take their last walk out of Willard as 5th graders. The walk will begin at the doors by the kindergarten wing and span the outer walkway behind the playground and extend to the front of the building by the bus loop.

As a reminder, Placement Letters are sent to all families in mid-July. On the back of the placement letters, we will include a class list. The Willard staff works very hard to place students very carefully. The Willard Handbook outlines the procedures of the placement process, including the Placement Review process, on page 8 of the Handbook.

Finally, we have two vacancies on the Willard SAC. Three wonderful parents have volunteered for these two positions, so the PTG is holding an election. Please look for the School Advisory Council Ballot in your child's backpack today or tomorrow. The ballot is due back to the Willard office by Noon on June 18th.

As always, thank you for all you do for Willard School.

TIME CAPSULE MESSAGES

The Willard Fifth Grade Class of 2010 is creating a time capsule as a class gift. The Grand Opening of our new building and the 375th Anniversary of Concord's incorporation make it a perfect time to document and create a legacy. We hope you will share your wishes for our Fifth Graders and/or a message to our future Willard Students by stopping by the school lobby to write in the Journal during the next week. Anticipated Opening: 2035.

SUMMER GREETINGS FROM YOUR SCHOOL LIBRARY!

The librarians of Alcott, Thoreau and Willard Schools have created the annual summer reading lists. As a new "green" initiative, we have decided to post the summer reading lists exclusively online. Please feel free to print them out for your own use. For best results, paste them into a word document or print them with
a landscape setting.

The lists can be accessed from the Willard Library homepage, or at the URL: http://district.colonial.net/SummerReadingList/
Enjoy your summer!

CCHS BUILDING COMMITTEE - MEMBERS NEEDED

Concord Carlisle Regional School Committee wishes to thank all who made it to the polls yesterday in Concord, and last month in Carlisle, to support CCHS design funds. Concord voters overwhelmingly passed a debt exclusion Tuesday for a feasibility study for Concord-Carlisle High School building project. The final vote was 1809 "yes", and 450 "no". The Massachusetts School Building Authority requires representation of the municipal government, school district, and members of the local community with design and construction experience. The CCHS Building Committee will be appointed by the Regional School Committee and will be responsible for the oversight, management, and administration of the design and construction of the CCHS building project. Please email your interest and qualifications to Diana Rigby, Superintendent, drigby@colonial.net by Monday, June 21, with the subject heading "CCHS Building Committee."
