FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

The response to Get Here Green Week has been quite positive. The sunny days this week provided a great opportunity for students, parents, and even a few staff members to bike to school. Teachers have been collecting data each morning about the mode of transportation for each child's arrival to school. At the end of the week, this information will be compiled and reported to the Willard Community in next week's edition of the Willard Weekly. There are many people to thank for the success of this week. First and foremost, thank you to Michelle Ernst for spearheading this initiative. Thank you to Jennifer Zuniga and Pam Moran for assisting with the planning and organization for the week in preparation for stepping into a larger role next year.

Students are buzzing about all things Carnival: selling raffle tickets to mom and dad, creating carnival posters, and dreaming about winning one of the many enticing raffle prizes. These are all topics of interest at Willard. Please mark your calendars for Sunday, June 6th.  This event is always the highlight of the spring for most Willard students. Plans are also underway for Field Day. Mr. Germond is soliciting parent help for Field Day Activities. As with all volunteer opportunities at school, all volunteers must have an approved CORI on file with the district. CORIs remain in effect for three years from the date of issue. In keeping with state law and district policy, no parent will be allowed to volunteer without an approved CORI.

One of the special events for 5th graders and their families is the Annual Willard Arts Night. Scheduled for June 9th, this evening begins with the Art Retrospective. This event features selected pieces of student art work from each child's collection of school created art. Students are encouraged to select favorite pieces to display. Along with the art work, students create and display an essay about their art work. Following the Art Retrospective, there will be a performance by the 5th grade Chorus, the Band, and the Orchestra.

This week, we concluded MCAS Testing in Science for students in Grades 5. Make-up testing was completed today. Although the school may receive some
preliminary results by the end of the school year, the official results will be mailed home in the fall.

The 5th Grade Celebration is scheduled for June 18th at 10:30 AM. All 5th grade parents are invited to attend. The last day of school is a half day on June 21st. At dismissal, 5th graders will be recognized with rousing applause by students and staff during their last walk out of Willard.

As always, thank you for all you do for Willard School.
- Pat Fernandes

5th GRADE JUNE CALENDAR

It's that time of year parents! The month of June will be a busy one for our 5th graders, so we have put together a Fifth Grade June Calendar with some important information for you. The information is also now on a Calendar on the Willard PTG website. Add the dates to your calendar immediately. Don't delay. Upcoming notices for all events will have more detailed information. If in doubt, go with times on subsequent notices.

5th GRADE ARTS NIGHT - JUNE 9th

Fifth grade families will celebrate the arts at Willard on Wednesday, June 9th with the Art Retrospective Exhibit Open House and performances by the school orchestra, band and chorus.

The 5th Grade Art Retrospective Exhibit will be on display around the school from June 1st through June 11th. Artwork can be viewed by families on Arts Night during the Art Retrospective Open House from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. Feel free to arrive during that time to see the wonderful artwork of our 5th grade students! Students must be accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver during the Art Retrospective Open House. To round out the Willard Arts Night, the school orchestra, band, and chorus will perform starting at 7 pm in the Auditorium. Band students need to warm-up at 6:30 pm in the music room. HELP STILL NEEDED - 4th & 5th GRADE

Help is still needed for the Willard Field Days in June. All parents and caregivers are welcome to come to a presentation by the Nutrition Coalition on school lunches. FROM THE LIBRARY

Save the date! On Monday, June 7, there will be a Volunteer Appreciation coffee from 8:45 to 9:30 at which time we will honor the many volunteers who have made the Library program so successful this year. Please come and say hello to friends old and new, have a morning treat and accept our most grateful thanks for all the hours that you, our most loyal volunteers, have given.

We are also asking for yet one more bit of volunteering. In order to have our shelves in perfect order, we will be holding our annual "shelf reading" time. If you could help with an hour or so during the week of June 7, we can put the books in neat shelf order. Stay after the volunteer coffee on the 7th to begin this process, or sign up in the library if you can spare an hour sometime that week.
