FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

The Annual Willard Science Fair was held on Sunday. It was a great success. Approximately sixty students representing grades K - 5 participated in this year's event. As I interacted with students to learn about their projects, I was particularly impressed with the level of student knowledge and enthusiasm that students demonstrated in sharing their knowledge about their projects. I would like to recognize the Science Fair Co-Chairs Sara Laschever and Deanna Vincent for all of their
hard work.

Recently, many students have taken advantage of the nice weather by biking to and from school. If your child bikes to school, please discuss bike safety with your child. It has come to my attention that some students could benefit from safety reminders. Parents know the safest route for their child to take to school. Please review that route with your child. It is a rule that students walk their bikes on the property. At dismissal, students must walk their bikes along the sidewalk from the bike rack until they have passed the last bus. The Town of Concord has a rule that elementary students must be in grade 4 or grade 5 to ride their bikes to school. A younger child may ride a bike to school only if the child is accompanied by his/her parent. Riding with an older sibling is not an option.

Kindergarten Registration for Willard School is scheduled for April 27th and April 29th. We look forward to hosting the Registration in the new Willard Auditorium.

All families should have received a school mailing this week relating to updating Student Registration for the Student Information System. We ask that you return this information in a timely manner. In addition, Student Information Sheets were included in this mailing. Although the Student Information Sheets are optional, this is your opportunity to provide input into the Placement Process. These sheets should be returned to the child's teacher when students return from vacation. These sheets will be passed along to next year's receiving teacher. Some parents may opt to complete the forms prior to vacation and return them on Friday.

Next week is school vacation. I hope that all members of the Willard School Community enjoy some relaxation during this break.

As always, thank you for all you do for Willard School.
- Pat Fernandes

Kindly submit articles for inclusion in the Willard Weekly to the editor, Christine Evans, at willardweekly@willardptg.org

SCIENCE FAIR SUCCESS

Willard's 11th Annual Science Fair was a resounding success (the din of happy voices and whirring machines in the cafeteria was booming at times). Over 60 students presented their research in colorful, informative, and entertaining displays. Project topics ranged from the dangers of high fructose corn syrup in our foods, the lives of black-capped chickadees, and the functioning of bathroom scales to the mysteries of tsunamis, geysers, optical illusions, rockets, and spoons. Many Willard families showed up to support their friends and learn from their classmates' investigations. The Mad Science presentation on the workings of air compression drew a large audience, and the event concluded with a raffle of science prizes and passes to area museums. Special thanks go to all of the hard-working and creative young Willard scientists, as well as to the committee members who brought baked goods to sell, visited every exhibit to discuss their projects with the kids, and helped break down tables and clean up afterward. As always, the school administration and staff, led by Pat Fernandes, made it all possible, especially Bev Lucas, Ann Fossett, Carl Sweeney, and Zeb Serra. We hope to see many students at the fair next year. Happy experimenting!
