FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

The Willard School response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti has been quite impressive. After four days, students and staff collected a total of $670.00 dollars. I want to thank School Advisory Council member, Suzanne Hogan for her assistance counting the donations. Suzanne also brought the change to a Coinstar location to tally the coins. These funds were donated to the UNICEF Haiti Relief Effort. Since the conditions in Haiti are so bleak, it is possible that we could sponsor other donation opportunities later in the spring. Stay tuned.

Thank you to all of the parents who have expressed interest in serving on the K-12 Wellness Committee. I have met with our PTG Co-Presidents, Kate Olney and Aimee Cupp, to select the Willard parent representatives. Melanie Plesko and Laura Klein will represent Willard on the Committee which will meet monthly through the end of the school year. The committee's first goal is to discuss ways to reduce trans fats, MSG, and high fructose corn syrup. The second goal is to investigate farm to school programs.

Willard students celebrated Half-Way Day yesterday - the 90th day of school. Many children enjoyed this activity and showed a great deal of creativity in their choice of attire. The collected money will be donated to Open Table.

Last night, Math Specialist Laurie Penney conducted a wonderful Parent Math Workshop. Approximately twenty Willard parents attended this workshop. As part of her presentation, Mrs. Penney discussed the importance of Number Sense, Place Value, and the development of flexible thinking. She also offered parents a variety of tips to strengthen number sense and logical thinking through home based games and activities.

First Semester Progress Reports will be mailed on February 5th. In addition, Special Education progress Reports and Special Subject Progress Reports will be issued at that time, as well. It is important to note that most Progress Report Learning Outcomes are not designed to be mastered until June. Using a 3 point scale, most children will earn a 2 for specific items on the Progress Report which indicates that the child is Making Progress toward the standard/outcome. There are a few items on the Progress Report that are measured on a 4 Point Scale. You will receive a detailed explanation with your child's Progress report.

As always, thank you for all you do for Willard School.
- Pat Fernandes

Kindly submit articles for inclusion in the Willard Weekly to the editor, Christine Evans, at willardweekly@willardptg.org
