FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

In response to last week's devastating earthquake in Haiti, Willard launched a school wide collection to assist the earthquake victims. It has been very moving to watch so many Willard children contribute to this cause by proudly dropping their coins and bills into the collection boxes. Clearly, our students are proud to be able to help the earthquake victims. While there are many reputable agencies involved in the relief effort, we decided to forward our donations to the Haiti Relief Campaign through UNICEF. The collection boxes will be displayed through Monday morning, January 25th. Thank you for your generosity.

Several Willard parents have expressed interest in serving on the district's Wellness Committee. The committee will meet monthly through the end of the school year. The superintendent has asked principals and PTG Presidents to collaborate on the selection of two parent representatives per building. The committee's first goal is to discuss ways to reduce trans fats, MSG, and high fructose corn syrup. The second goal is to investigate farm to school programs. Thank you to the parents who have expressed interest in serving on this committee. The participants will be selected by the end of the month.

Last week, Willard students learned a great deal about Dr. Martin Luther King and social justice. Members of the 5th Grade Willard Chorus performed last week at the Martin Luther King Celebration sponsored by the Human Rights Council. The students sang beautifully and represented Willard quite admirably. Thank you to the Chorus participants and to Ms. Bethell. All Willard students and staff enjoyed participating in the all school Martin Luther King assembly last Friday. Our third grade students and teachers planned and carried out the assembly. Students enjoyed
learning about the brave contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and Ruby Bridges. We also experienced a school wide Open Circle as we learned about these three important Americans.

Next week, Willard students will celebrate Half-Way Day. Willard students celebrate this annual event by dressing up in a half-way style manner. In order to participate in this silly celebration of the 90th Day of school, we ask students to contribute fifty cents. The collected money will be donated to Open Table.

As you know, Math Specialist Laurie Penney has planned a Parent Math Workshop for next Wednesday, January 27th at 7:00 PM in the Willard Library. Details of this event are included here. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Mrs. Penney at lpenney@colonial.net.

The first semester will conclude on January 27th. Progress Reports will be mailed on February 5th. In addition, Special Education progress Reports and Special Subject Progress Reports will be issued at that time, as well. It is important to note that most Progress Report Learning Outcomes are not designed to be mastered until June. Using a 3 point scale, most children will earn a 2 for specific items on the Progress Report which indicates that the child is Making Progress toward the standard/outcome. There are a few items on the Progress Report that are measured on a 4 Point Scale. You will receive a detailed explanation with your child's Progress report.

As always, thank you for all you do for Willard School.
- Pat Fernandes
