FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

The weather cooperated this week allowing student photo day to occur without a hitch. Parent Coordinators Judy Bernard and Jennifer Clark deserve our thanks for managing the details of this important event. Working with the photographers from Coffee Pond, they were at Willard bright and early on Tuesday scoping out the best location for outdoor photos.

If you have been to Willard over the past week, you know that the construction fence is down and the final stage of the landscaping project is underway. Plans call for the right hand side of the building to be landscaped in a similar fashion to the left side. On Tuesday afternoon, the contractors were able to begin the final paving project ahead of schedule. Next Tuesday, October 13th, we will plan to begin using the dedicated bus loop. Similarly, we will begin using the parent drop off loop on Tuesday as well. If you drop your child off in the morning, please enter from Powder Mill Road in the normal manner. Take an immediate right and proceed along the drop-off loop. Do not stop in the loop if you need to get out of the car to accompany your child into the building or to assist your child. The morning drop-off loop is designed for a quick drop-off. Thank you for your cooperation.

Just as the appearance of the front of the building is evolving, changes have occurred behind the building as well. The tennis court surface has been painted. Within the week, the pathway to the tennis court entrance will be graded and paved. Once that happens, Mr. Germond will begin to use the tennis court for a tennis unit with some grade levels. Adjacent to the tennis courts, the half basketball court has been painted as well. Students have enjoyed using this play area. They have also enjoyed playing on the swings.

On Friday morning, Willard will host 14 Japanese visitors from our sister city of Nanae, Japan. I will take our visitors on a tour of Willard. After the tour, the visitors will spend time in two classrooms teaching origami to students. This is a nice opportunity for our students to enhance their global awareness.

As I mentioned in last week's article, this year's Author's Fest will feature Brian Lies, Barbara O'Connor, Suzy Kline, and Mitali Perkins. Offering a combination of whole grade presentations and individual classroom workshops, children always benefit from the excitement of this annual opportunity. Following the Authors' Fest, the Annual Willard Book Fair provides students and families with the opportunity to purchase quality books which include both classic and contemporary titles. The Willard Library will benefit from the book sales generated by the fair.

The Willard School Advisory Council will meet on Wednesday, October 14th at 6:30 in the Willard Library. SAC members include staff members, Janice Shear, Kate Mullen, and Nancy Barrett. Parent members include Michelle Ernst, Suzanne Hogan, Karen Young, and Charles Spofford. Liz Berk is the Community Member who serves on the Willard SAC.

The special subject teachers (Art, Music, PE, & Library) will present a Curriculum Night on Wednesday, October 21st at 7:00 PM in the auditorium. The teachers will share information about their curriculum and offer parents the opportunity to ask questions. I encourage all parents to attend.

Planning is underway for the Willard School Dedication Ceremony which is scheduled for Sunday, November 1st at 1:00 PM. The 5th Grade Chorus will sing two songs during the ceremony, including the new Willard School song. Our Technology Specialist, Mrs. Matheus is working with the Earth Care Club helping students prepare for their role at the Dedication. Members of the Earth Care Club will play an important role during the tours that will follow the Dedication Ceremony. I do hope that many families can be present for this celebration.

As always, thank you for all you do for Willard School.

Also, many thanks to Sue Bumpus, Lori Hick, Jennifer Wasserman, Alex Kuchar, Adeeva Fritz, Kristin Martines, Sandy Freund, and Michelle Ernst for helping the morning go so smoothly. The weather certainly cooperated!

Please come to the Willard Parent Social on Saturday, the 17th, 7 PM, at the home of Andrew and Christine Evans. Tickets are $25 person or $30 per person at the door. Checks can be dropped off in the box by the office. This is a really fun evening to catch up with old friends and is a great opportunity for new Willard families to meet each other!

The annual Book Fair is coming up on Monday and Tuesday, October 19th and 20th. This is perfect place to start your holiday shopping.

Thank you to Christine Evans for installing the new Bulletin Board across from the nurses office. Next time you are at school please take a moment to check out the PTG related events and calendar.
- Kate Olney and Aimee Cupp, Co-Presidents Willard PTG

PTG BOARD MEETING MINUTES

The Willard PTG meets once each month to discuss events, activities, planning and finance. The first PTG Board meeting of the 2009-2010 school year was held on Monday, September 21st and the minutes from that meeting are now available on the Willard PTG website, www.willardptg.org and on the Willard PTG Bulletin board across from the nurse's office. The next meeting will be held on Monday, October 21st at 12:30pm in the Willard Conference Room. All Willard parents are welcome to attend.

BOOK FAIR

The Book Fair arrives at Willard in just over a week, on October 19th and 20th! Kids and teachers alike are getting excited, so please look at the schedule to see the day and time that your child's classroom will visit the fair. If you choose to send money into school with your child, volunteers will be on hand to help students negotiate the purchasing process. You are also welcome to join your child's class at their scheduled time, or to stop by the Book Fair any time that works for you.

Among the newly-released and award-winning titles, your kids will find a great variety of fun and informative books. At the Author's Fest table, they will find books written by the very authors that visit their classroom during next week's Author's Fest. And - for students looking for a possible gift for their classroom teachers - the Book Fair will feature special Teacher Wish Piles where kids and parents can find "wished-for" books individually selected by their teachers.

We'll be opening at 8:15am on both Monday and Tuesday, closing at 4:00pm on Monday and at 12:30pm on Tuesday. And please don't forget our Monday evening social, a great time for Willard families to browse books and visit with friends. The social takes place from 6:30 until 8:00pm, with supervised childcare available in the library.

Please remember that all purchases will directly benefit the Willard School Library in the form of new books for Willard students. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Patti Reilly, patriciareilly@comcast.net.
