FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Phase 2 of the construction project is progressing well at Willard. During the past few days, the last remnants of the old Willard have been removed. The base coat of the dedicated bus loop has been installed and the grading of the areas surrounding the bus loop is entering the final stages of work. I have been told that this work is on schedule and the final paving is planned for the Columbus Day Weekend. I feel that the front of the building looks quite lovely. I hope that you agree. The landscaping is lush and the grass is growing in nicely. Yesterday, two new benches were installed in front of the building. I have to say that many people have commented that they are just as impressed with the aesthetics of the rear of the building. Our new school truly does look like a school in a park.

The children are enjoying the playground structures. The new playground structures from the "old" Willard have been installed with some a few whimsical features such as a large goldfish which serves as a footbridge connecting two pieces of equipment. Some of the new equipment is quite unique. Ask your child to describe the features of the wave slide.

Last night, we held our second Back to School Night for parents of students in grades 1 & 2. During the General Session, I shared some information about the new building, school-based programs, and school procedures. Our final Back to School Night of the year, for grades 3 -5, is scheduled for Wednesday, September 30th. The General Session begins at 7:00 in the Auditorium and the classroom session begins at 7:30 and ends at 8:30. This is a wonderful way to connect with your child's teacher and establish a a strong home-school connection.

The "punch list" work continues at Willard so we do have a fair amount of activity after school hours with a variety of sub-contractors. Next month, the traverse climbing wall will be installed in the gym. This will add to the variety of activities that are available to students during physical education classes.

Planning is underway for the Willard School Dedication Ceremony which is scheduled for Sunday, November 1st at 1:00 PM. Our Technology Specialist, Mrs. Matheus is working with the Earth Care Club this year. Members of the Earth Care Club will play an important role during the tours that will follow the Dedication Ceremony. I do hope that many families can be present for this celebration.

It has come to my attention that some parents have been parking at the townhouses located at 149 Powder Mill Road. The neighbors have expressed concerns about this. Willard vehicles should not be parking there. A paved path has been installed connecting the two properties in order to allow a safe walking route for students connecting the two properties. Thank you for your cooperation.

As always, thank you for all you do for Willard School.
- Pat Fernandes

Furthermore, information about upcoming Enrichment Assemblies, METCO Late Bus dates and MCAS testing for the spring are also available.

LIBRARY VOLUNTEER INFORMATION

If you signed up to volunteer in the Willard Library this year, you should have received your schedule via email this week. Please take a moment to review the schedule, mark your calendar, and read the attached guidelines. If you have not done so already, please contact Library Aide Ann Fossett (afossett@colonial.net) to schedule your attendance at a brief library training one morning in the near future.

If you signed up and did not receive an email schedule, it may be that you do not have a current, approved CORI form on file in the Willard Office and must work with Willard Secretary Bev Lucas or Shirley Nazzaro to apply for or renew your CORI. Once you have confirmed that your CORI is up-to-date, please then contact us directly to be added to the volunteer list.

Librarian Erica Chicco and Ann have been updating the Willard Library Web Page so if you haven't checked it out recently, please do. The Willard Library Volunteer Handbook is currently posted there for your reading pleasure, and soon the Volunteer Schedule will be accessible there as well.

LOOKING FOR YOUR MONEY?

Need to be reimbursed? Please fill out the check request information sheet and attach all receipts. This can be done electronically to kathioneil@gmail.com or by mail to her house, 171 Deacon Haynes Road, or by dropping off your completed form to the Treasurer's Box in the office. SCHOOL PHOTO DAY

Registration forms for Willard School Photo Day were distributed via classroom teachers this week. Each child in a family should have come home with one. Extra copies are available at the front office. We are looking forward to seeing smiling faces on October 6th!

BOOK FAIR: OCTOBER 19th and 20th

Please mark your calendars: Our annual Book Fair, offering educational and fun books to students, teachers, and parents, will be held in the new Willard cafeteria on Monday, October 19th, and Tuesday, October 20th. Proceeds from the Book Fair directly support the Willard School Library and benefit all Willard students in the form of new books that are chosen by the library staff.

The traditional Monday Evening Social is a great time to browse and select books, and to connect with other Willard families. And - although we won't have ice cream on hand in the new school this year - we will be providing supervised games, puzzles, and stories for children in the library on Monday evening from 6:30pm until 8:00pm. If you can't make it to the Social, we encourage you to visit the Book Fair during the school day. A schedule will come home the week before the Fair letting you know when your child's class will attend. More details about the Fair, including information on books written by authors visiting your child's classroom, will appear in future Willard Weeklies - so stay posted!

A final note: the Book Fair is entirely run by volunteers, and we'd greatly appreciate your help. If you have a few hours to volunteer on Monday or Tuesday, please e-mail our Volunteer Coordinator, Laura Klein (laurajaneklein@yahoo.com).

We look forward to seeing you at the Fair.
- Book Fair Committee (Aimee Cupp, Laura Klein, Patti Reilly and Jennifer Waldron)

HELP NEEDED FOR WILLARD GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION
This is the final step! This is the fun part! On Sunday, November 1 at 1pm, we will be proudly opening our new building to the Town. In order to do this, we need your assistance. Ahead of time, and on the day, we are looking for people to assist with decorations. On November 1, we need helpers for setting up, serving cake and drinks, and cleaning up. In addition we are looking for people to lead groups from station to station around the building, where Environmental Club students will explain the building's green features. All these jobs are small, but crucial to making the Grand Opening a success. Please join us in the fun! Contact Michelle Ernst and Louisa Paushter at celebratewillard@gmail.com

Once again, Willard is participating in the nationwide Trick or Treat for UNICEF program, and we need a parent volunteer to help collect the little orange boxes and organize the donation. If you are interested in helping, please contact Suzanne Hogan at suzanne.hogan@comcast.net. Thanks.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION FOR PARENTS

Writing for Children. There is no greater reward than writing for children. The stories you craft can fill them with laughter or help them work through problems. You truly can make a difference in how children see themselves and how they view the world. But first, you need to learn to write stories children will love. Then you need to learn to market your writing to children's editors. This practical, hands-on course will teach you the basics of writing for children and then show you how to professionally represent your work to editors. Melissa Stewart is the award-winning author of more than 100 books for children. She has written everything from board books for preschoolers to reference books for teens.
The 6-week class meets at CCHS from 7 to 9:30 PM starting September 29, and the fee is $120. To enroll online, visit www.ace.colonial.net, or to enroll by phone please call 318-1540. Concord-Carlisle Adult & Community.
