FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Last Friday, Willard students and staff gathered in the gym to celebrate our annual Back to School Assembly. During the assembly, I had the privilege of introducing and welcoming new staff. The following professional staff members were introduced: Ms. Chicco, our new Librarian; Mrs. Squire, grade 4 teacher; Ms. Turner, Kindergarten Teacher; Ms. Vitello, School Counselor; Mrs. DeMille, CASE Teacher. The following Tutors and Aides were also introduced: Mrs. Loiselle, Kindergarten Aide; Ms. Hennessey and Ms. Rosa, First Grade Aides, and Ms. Levine, Grade 4 Aide. These new staff members are very talented and enthusiastic. I am very excited about the positive energy that they bring to their positions. A highlight of the assembly was the introduction of the new Willard School song. Ms. Bethell, taught the song, We're Willard, to all students and staff with the assistance of Mr. Sweeney. Students and staff members
participated in the sing along activity with great enthusiasm and vigor. Our 5th graders will perform the song at the Willard Dedication Ceremony on November 1st. The Assembly ended with a video montage of the Old and New Willard, prepared by Technology Specialist Genoveva Matheus. The Green Elements of the new school were a major focus of the slide show
which was narrated by Ms. Bethell and Mr. Sweeney. Showing images of the demolition, they explained that the materials from the old building were separated and recycled for use in a future building project just as our new school was built with many recycled materials.

Reading in a boat, reading at the beach, reading by the pool - are all popular places to relax and read. Many students and staff members did just that over the summer. These photos are displayed on the bulletins board between the Nurse's Office and the Reading Suite. It's not too late to add your child's photo to the display. Please send in a photo with a sentence identifying your child and his/her location. If you didn't have a chance to take the photo during the summer, feel free to take it now.

Last night, we held our first evening presentation in the new auditorium with Kindergarten Back to School Night. During the General Session, I shared some general information about the new building and the Kindergarten Modified Full Day Program. We have scheduled Back to School Nights for Grades 1 & 2 on Wednesday, September 23rd and for Grades 3 - 5 on Wednesday, September 30th. On both nights, the General Session begins at 7:00 in the Auditorium and the classroom session begins at 7:30 and ends at 8:30. This is a wonderful way to connect with your child's teacher and establish a a strong home-school connection. I hope to see you at these important school events.

During this week's on-site construction meeting I had the opportunity to check in on the progress of the demolition work. Yes, in case you're wondering, I do have my own hard hat! I was pleased to hear that the demo work is progressing as planned and the contractors do expect to have the dedicated bus loop completed and paved during the Columbus Day weekend.
In the meantime, I appreciate your patience with the shared bus and parent drop-off loop. For safety reasons, please make sure that your child exits your car on the passenger side only. The "punch list" work continues at Willard so we do have a fair amount of activity after school hours.

The Willard School Dedication is scheduled for Sunday, November 1st at 1:00 PM. I do hope that many families can be present for this celebration.

As always, thank you for all you do for Willard School.
- Pat Fernandes

CCPI PARENT REPRESENTATIVE NEEDED

The Concord Carlisle Parents Initiative (CCPI) is a working subcommittee of the school Superintendent's Community Advisory Council on Student Health. We are not only a group of concerned parents, but have an official responsibility within the Concord Carlisle School District. Our by-laws specify two representatives from each elementary school, the middle schools and the high school. And we are still in need of representatives from Willard School.

CCPI meets once a month, currently scheduled at 9:30 AM on the third Wednesday in the Concord Public Library. (This time may change due to conflicts of scheduling this year). The elementary school representatives report on concerns and events at their respective schools, bring news of programs of relevance to parents back to their school communities and may be asked to support programs which CCPI decides to sponsor. Programs we have sponsored in the past have focused on Nutrition, Bullying, Sexuality and Positive Parenting. We are always looking for new ideas and programming that would be of value to our parent community.

Joining the CCPI board can be very informative and fun. It is a volunteer job that allows you to follow your interests while working with other dedicated and caring Concord/Carlisle parents. For more information, look at our website at www.ccpionline.org and/or contact Kathe Falzer (978) 369-6118 or lkfalzer@comcast.net or Regine Ryder (978) 318-1964 or acupoint.ryder@yahoo.com.
