FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, we have much to be grateful for as a Willard Community. We have a beautiful new green building with state of the art green energy-related systems and technology. We have a beautiful auditorium and a fabulous gym with a traverse climbing wall. The children appreciate this wonderful learning environment and the
Willard staff is grateful for their excellent teaching/work environment. We now have our new shade structure in place. This sheltered space will provide students with a spot out of the sun for quiet table-top games and activities. In the spring, the PTG will furnish the shade structure with tables.

Very soon, we will hold an Evacuation Drill with Detective Scott Camilleri. During an Evacuation Drill, students are transported by bus to the Sanborn Building. This drill provides practice with a quiet and orderly exit from the building. Following building egress protocols similar to a fire drill, students board buses and travel with their teachers to the Sanborn building. Upon arrival at Sanborn, students exit the buses and proceed to the auditorium where teachers take attendance. Students then board buses again for a safe return back to Willard. The
Evacuation Drill is facilitated by Detective Scott Camilleri as part of the safety protocol of the District Response Plan.

In keeping with our Willard tradition, I have invited all students to share their thoughts about what they are thankful for this Thanksgiving season. I will post students work in the coming days. As you prepare to take to the road or the air to reach your Thanksgiving destination, I wish you safe travels and a wonderful holiday with family and friends.

As always, thank you for all you do for Willard School.
- Pat Fernandes

UNICEF DRIVE MEETS GOAL

Congratulations! Together Willard students, families and community members met the challenge of donating $1,000 to UNICEF through our participation in this year's Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF program. We received donations ranging from pennies to twenty dollar bills, which, when combined, brought our 2009 total donation number to $1,012.15. Though this number is less than in past years, it still enough to bring us to "Ambassador" donation status and will be put to good use immediately to help children around the globe.

In the wake of the disasters that swept through Asia-Pacific just over a month ago, UNICEF field teams have been working non-stop to provide relief and support. For instance, they have already distributed 12,751 hygiene kits, four million aqua tab tablets (to make water potable for families) and 20 tons of chloramine B for cleaning 100,000 contaminated wells. In addition, UNICEF is working to establish temporary schools and distribute educational materials throughout the affected countries. In Indonesia, they've provided 250 school tents, 60 School-in-a Box kits and 60 recreation kits to help nearly 70,000 children return to school. In Cambodia, as a number of schools are actually still under water, they're working to facilitate education for nearly 36,118 students as soon as possible.

We are very fortunate to be in Concord in our new Willard School. Thank you for reaching out to help children who have much less.
