On Tuesday, we reached an important milestone of the Willard Building
Project. We began using the new dedicated bus loop. By separating bus
traffic from the parent pick-up zone, the dismissal process and morning
arrival have been quite smooth. Please keep in mind that the parent drop
off loop is designed for the quick drop off of your child(ren) in the
morning. If you need to get out of your car or if your child needs
assistance, please park your car in the parking lot. Thank you for your
cooperation. I am waiting for a status report from the construction supervisor about the projected completion of the site work so that I can
determine when 4th & 5th grade students can ride their bikes to school. I
will share that information as soon as it is available.
Last Friday, we hosted 14 Japanese visitors from Nanae, Japan. Accompanied
by Nancy Barrett, our Occupational Therapist, I escorted our visitors on a
tour of our new school. Over the years, a few staff members (Nancy
Barrett, Barbara Lehn, & former Willard teacher, Sue Guest) have visited
Nanae, our sister city in Japan. Each year, Nanae sends a delegation to
Concord. After the tour, the visitors spent time in two classrooms
teaching origami. In Mrs. Shear's third grade classroom and in Ms. Rivers & Mrs. Hehn's 5th grade classroom, the visitors guided the students and
staff through an origami project making paper airplanes. The highlight of
the activity in both classrooms occurred when students launched their
paper airplanes from one end of the classroom to the other. Based on the
enthusiasm that was displayed during this activity, I think Willard has a
few budding aeronautical engineers. The group also made a brief visit to
Ms. Lehn's 2nd grade classroom. Earlier in the week, Ms. Lehn hosted one
of the Nanae teachers in her classroom for the day. Over the course of
the year, Ms. Lehn and her students will communicate with a classroom in
Nanae as a classroom project. Opportunities like these provide students
with a greater appreciation for other cultures and also enhance global
awareness. We hope to be able to send more staff members to Japan in the
future.
The 2009 Author's Fest began yesterday and the Annual Willard Book Fair begins on Monday. On Monday evening, students will be able to spend time
in the Library engaged in various supervised quiet activities while their
parents shop for books. This is a new feature of the Willard Book Fair.
The Willard Library will benefit from the book sales generated by the fair.
Parents are reminded that the special subject teachers (Art, Music, PE, &
Library) will present a Curriculum Night on Wednesday, October 21st at
7:00 PM in the library. The teachers will share information about their
curriculum and offer parents the opportunity to ask questions. I
encourage all parents to attend. Prior to the Curriculum Presentation, I
will be hosting a Principal's Coffee that same evening from 6:00 - 7:00 PM
in the Teacher's Lounge adjacent to the cafeteria. All parents are
welcome to attend. In response to feedback provided via the Parent
Survey, Principal's Coffees will be scheduled periodically during the day
as well as the evening during this school year. During the Coffee, I will
share information about the start of the school year, update parents on
the status of the building project, and answer questions. Feel free to
drop by at any time during the hour. I hope that you are able to attend.
Planning is underway for the Willard School Dedication Ceremony which is
scheduled for Sunday, November 1st at 1:00 PM. The 5th Grade Chorus will
sing two songs during the ceremony, including the new Willard School song. Our Technology Specialist, Mrs. Matheus is working with the Earth Care
Club helping students prepare for their role at the Dedication. Members
of the Earth Care Club will play an important role during the tours that
will follow the Dedication Ceremony. I do hope that many families can be
present for this celebration.
As always, thank you for all you do for Willard School.

TRICK OR TREAT FOR UNICEF |
Once again, Willard is participating in the nationwide Trick or Treat for UNICEF program. UNICEF helps save, protect and improve the lives of children around the world, giving priority to the most disadvantaged children and countries in greatest need. Last year Willard students collected and donated over $1,200 and we hope to do the same this year. Check out www.unicefusa.org to learn how UNICEF helps kids by providing 56% of children in developing countries with their immunizations, by building wells for access to clean water, and by helping to build schools, to train teachers and to provide school supplies.
Please look for the little orange boxes to come home in your child's backpack the week of October 26. Extra boxes will be available near the school office. In an effort to be green, you will not receive any additional printed information along with the box. Return your boxes with change inside to Willard on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 2nd and 3rd. Too old to Trick or Treat? Host a Halloween Party to benefit UNICEF - registration details are also on the UNICEF USA website.
I hope you will participate. The Willard student donations can help to make a big difference in the lives of many children. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Suzanne Hogan at suzanne.hogan@comcast.net. Thank you. |
