Science Fair References and Resources

ALL STUDENTS are invited to celebrate science and share their observations at the Willard School Science Fair to be held Sunday, April 11, 2010 from 2 to 4 p.m. At this event, students display what they have learned through their own investigations and discovery. This wonderful event truly showcases students’ efforts and creativity in a fun, noncompetitive forum.

Students are already scientists, the ultimate detectives! Without even trying, you experiment and observe to make discoveries. Here are some questions
you may have already asked:

  • What do your plant seeds need to grow?
  • What happens when you mix baking soda and vinegar?
  • What liquids float on water?
  • What shape car goes down your ramp fastest?
  • Does anything live in a tree stump?
  • How does a tornado form?

YOU decide how to do/show your own science project. Pick something that interests you! You can answer questions like these by using a simple scientific method (explained in the confirmation kit sent to participants). You may also explore your science topic using other approaches such as:

  • collect and record information (data) that you measure or observe
  • make a model or draw a diagram depicting a scientific phenomenon
  • build an apparatus that demonstrates scientific principles
  • research, illustrate (or photograph) and explain a scientific wonder

Create a cool science project by yourself or with a friend or sibling. Feel free to work with parents or other adults, but make this project your own. When planning a project, keep in mind:

  • Each student or team will have a 3' by 3' display space on half of a 3' by 6' table.
  • Projects may not use open or concealed flames, gases, non-contained microbial cultures, flammable liquids, or anything else that could be considered dangerous.
  • HAVE FUN!!

During the afternoon of the fair, as student projects are displayed in the cafeteria, there will be a return of last year’s MAD SCIENCE educational performers with a new show called “Up, Up & Away” in the Willard gym, ribbons for participants, as well as a raffle.
